What is PAT testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is crucial for ensuring electrical safety in settings such as workplaces and rental properties. It involves detailed inspections and electrical tests to identify and mitigate risks, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations. Regular PAT ensures the longevity and reliability of electrical appliances, contributing to a safer environment.
During a PAT test, trained professionals inspect and test electrical appliances for potential faults or defects that could lead to electrical hazards, such as electric shocks or fires. This typically involves visual inspections, as well as electrical testing using specialist equipment to check for issues like insulation resistance, earth continuity and polarity. After testing, appliances are labelled to indicate they have passed the safety checks. The frequency of PAT testing depends on factors such as the type of appliance, its usage and the environment in which it is used.

What do I get from my PAT report?
A thorough PAT report gives you everything you need for your compliance records:
- Details of the testing company: name, contact information and accreditation.
- Client information: details about the organisation and the site locations tested.
- A list of all appliances tested, with unique identification numbers, descriptions and locations.
- Test results for each appliance: visual inspection, insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity, earth leakage and functional checks where applicable.
- A clear pass or fail status for each appliance, with notes or recommendations for further action.
- Comments and recommendations from the engineer, including any repairs or replacements needed.
- The test date and the recommended date for your next test.
- Certificates and documentation to verify compliance with the relevant safety standards.
It is essential to review your PAT report thoroughly to make sure all appliances are safe to use and comply with the regulations. If you would like one of our contractors to break the report down for you, they are more than happy to do so. If your report comes back with a fail, we can rectify the fault for you so you can get back to running your business.
Why PAT tests are so important
Defective electrical devices are the leading cause of workplace fires, contributing to roughly 2,000 such incidents and 1,000 instances of electric shock every year across the UK. Ensuring the safety of electrical equipment is required under the Electricity at Work Regulations. If you are based in Wales, get in touch today to organise a PAT test with us.
In summary
If you believe your assets need a PAT test, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are more than happy to carry out the testing at your convenience, because we understand the risks of leaving your equipment untested.
